Winkle has become an Instagram sensation, which has lead to her recent fame.
Baddie has attended the hottest Hollywood events this year, including the VMAs
and been photographed hanging out with the top celebrities which include Miley
Cyrus. This 87 year old lady became famous
when her granddaughter started an Instagram account documenting her grandmother’s
funky style. Baddie Winkle’s road to fame is similar to that of Lilbub and
grumpy cat, because all it took was for one photo to be well received by other internet users and circulated on the
web. Nancy Baym pointed out that with
the rise of the internet individuals are able to communicate images, messages
and ideas with the masses, thus allowing people and creatures to become an
internet phenomenon (Baym, 11). It is because of the internet that an 87 year old lady was able to reinvent herself as Baddie Winkle and become relevant again; thus the internet gives individuals power. I have posted a YouTube video documenting

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your post! It really demonstrates the power social media has on our identity. Baddie Winkle is a perfect example of an internet personality. I love how Baddie uses new platforms that many older generations ignore or mock. She isn't afraid to be who she wants to be, and really proves that age is just a number. I have seen her photos circulating around social media for a while now, and it is awesome to see her get recognized by Miley Cyrus. I find this to be such a great example of the positive impact social media can have on society. It has created an outlet for an 87 year old grandmother to get in touch with her youth, proving that you do not need to be of a certain age to enjoy this new wave of interconnectivity in the digital age.
