If You Were Honest On Social Media

Hello class!
First blog post up and it was a hard pick to decide what to share with you all, it was a close toss up between a recent video of a little girl who is running away scared from her shadow (its a great laugh I would recommend watching) but I decided to share a Buzzfeed video that speaks volumes about our social lives and the way we choose to portray ourselves via social media.
Check it out

This Buzzfeed video perfectly captures how social media is used and controlled by users. Digital media and its varying outlets such as Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and Facebook are central to our cultural routines and the way we view each other. With social media becoming such a norm to our cultural lives I think it's important to step back and acknowledge that not everything you post, write, send, tweet, is authentic and true to the person's real emotions or experiences. Sometimes people will compare themselves to others solemnly based on a person's social media profile, when in reality people share the parts of their lives they choose too, and not everything you see on social media is true or real. As seen in the video, Eugene is snap chatting partying with his friends then looks to the camera and says "I only send you pictures when i'm partying so I look like tons of fun". Definitely some food for thought when thinking about the ways we articulate ourselves through our social media posts.
Thanks

  1. Hey Jess!
I totally agree with you that this BuzzFeed video speaks volumes about how we use social media and how we think we will be perceived online if we post the perfect photo with the perfect caption. I find that BuzzFeed is able to kind of make fun our our generation in regards to our social media use but they are able to do it in a way that we think is funny.

    1. Hey Mikayla,
yeah I agree 100% that Buzzfeed finds these humorous ways to mock millennials and our use of digital media. I know we've all heard someone say "oh my god look how cute this couple is in this photo its disgusting" but then will 'like' the photo on social media. There are fine lines to how we portray our emotions and life vs. what is real.

  2. This video perfectly captures the ways in which we are able to create an alter ego of ourselves on social media. By highlighting the amount of overthinking and pre-planning that goes into our every day social media use in a light-hearted way, this video effectively portrays the importance we place on our every day social media usage.
