Hello fellow bloggers!
One of my favourite social media sites to browse, read
stories, and watch videos on is Buzzfeed. They have such a unique point of view
on many subjects that revolve around the social and celebrity world.
I have found an interesting Buzzfeed video about Instagraming
and how people perceive a person’s picture vs what the Intagrammer is are
actually doing.
It is an interesting point of view where it shows the
reality of what is actually occurring compared to how people alter the reality to
represent themselves in a certain way. Perception on social media is very
important and this video illustrates how everyday people try to alter this
perception of reality to look cooler or more important. This funny video
creates comedy from the everyday activities that we have normalized in society
and there are many more where that came from.
Check some of their other videos out as well!
Somehow people forget this fact when viewing other people on social media. They see people’s posts as a true representation of their lives. Then, they start to compare themselves with these idealized versions of others online, which make them unsatisfied with their lives. I even read somewhere that Instagram is the most depressing social platform online because of these practices.
ReplyDeleteI love this video! This was my first time watching it and quite honestly I’m surprised I haven’t seen it already since I’m always on BuzzFeed and recognize that girl from other BuzzFeed videos. To me this is such an accurate representation of how people take Instagram photos. I feel that we go above and beyond to do everything it takes to capture that perfect Instagram photo. On Instagram there are only really three ways that people can interact with your profile which include liking a photo, commenting on a photo and direct messaging a user. This leads me to my next point - the power of a ‘like’. All Instagram users whether they admit it or not stride to gain as many likes on a photo as possible. In my eyes the value of a ‘like’ somewhat represents virtual popularity, the more likes you get the more popular you are. With that being said it’s as if there’s pressure when it comes to posting a photo because you don’t want people to not like it. For some (including myself and that girl from the video) the process of posting can be a lot more time consuming than it needs to be. To explain further, taking a picture seems so simplistic but then there is the effort to get the right angle, the right lighting, the right filter, the right caption, etc. In conclusion there is so much editing that can be done to an Instagram photo, leading to the question as to whether or not photos on Instagram are actually what you see or if they are edited so much that it does not create an accurate representation.
